Junkyard Buggs is Honored as a Legend
Tuesday, November 5, 2013 – Waldorf, MD
A small venue in Southern Maryland was the site of a very special occasion. The popular night club, Big Mouth was turned into a ceremonial hall when Steven "Buggs" Herrion was given the honor of being inducted into the Go-Go Radio Hall of Fame. This is a ceremony held every so often by Hosea "Hartbeat" Williams of the Conga Hour on the famed internet radio station. This is not the same Hall of Fame Inductions as the Go-Go Awards where Chuck Brown received the first ever such honor, but this is just as important because it has honored men who are well deserving of such a praise.
Of the past inductees of the Go-Go Radio Hall of Fame Awards are Jungle Boogie, Sugar Foots Rickey, Go-Go Mickey, and James Funk. All of these men
should be honored many times over because they all were pioneers of the Go-Go culture, making contributions to what most Washingtonians hold dear to their hearts.
The event on Tuesday night was all about Buggs, and amongst the attendees were several people from the Go-Go Community that love Buggs dearly. Coop and Antwan "Big G" Glover were there to honor Buggs in word and in deed. Whop (Wisdom Speeks) slipped off the set of a video shoot for his latest release to come and pay homage to the "Goat". Whop was the first to let it be known the power of influence that Buggs has had on his career, and that sentiment was echoed by every single performer that spoke on BU's greatness.
Big G referred to Buggs as his "Pops", because as he put it, "It was Buggs that inspired me to be all who I am today. Everything I did was modeled behind him while I did my best to do what Pops did in my own kind of way. It was the fact that Buggs was a general and did great things with practically nothing that showed me that I could do the same thing. Nobody has ever done it better than the Goat."
Big Butch, Moe Shorter, Blue-Eyed Daryl, Buggy, Killa Kal, and Slick Rick, just to name a few, gave their heartfelt accolades as well. In fact, if there was time, everybody in the room would have spoken, but Buggs wanted to hear the band play, so Hartbeat cut the speeches short and had Big G and Blue-eyed Daryl present Buggs with his awards.
Prime Time performed a tribute song that showcased Killa Kal who torched the mic, but not so much that the freestyle king, Big G, couldn't shine. Other notable performers were B-man, BJ, O Diggady, and RB as Prime Time gave a crankin' show that held the people in amazement till the end.
Buggs is a real class act and a man worthy of even more than a small audience of lifetime admirers and protégés. Although there wasn't a large audience, that didn't seem to matter to Mr. Buggs as he relished in the joy of being appreciated at such a high degree. We love you Buggs, and we expect much more from you in the near future as you continue to be a force for progress in the movement to put Go-Go on a course that will drive our industry to the next level. It's a long time coming, and we are certain that you'll be there for the big push.
