Ear To The Street
D.C. Violence is Escalating
South East Washington D.C. is going through a period of youth violence that has the government officials participating in daily conference calls and trying to mediate truces between rival cliques around the S.E. section of the City.
The beefing is so random and wide-spread that the police have to stay on constant high alert, ready to respond at a moment's notice virtually all over the area. The girls in "Chopper City" are beefing with the girls in "Woodland". The guys are beefing over the girls. The girls are beefing over the girls, and the saga continues.
No one has any real answers because much of the violence stems from beefs that started a generation or two ago. How do you mediate a truce to stop a beef that spans decades between groups that have bleeding boundary lines? The worst part of all this is that the beefing has become more prevalent amongst school-age children. 5 people were shot yesterday, city-wide, and two of them were students attending Ballou High School. Police were unable to find the culprits or get any answers concerning why this may have happened, but the investigation continues as the police are requesting the community to get involved.
And, the community is starting to take notice with many stepping up to do something. The local radio station, 95.5 WPGC reached out to Walthon Lee, better known as "RB" of the Go-Go band Prime Time Band and Show. The station invited him to be on their evening rush hour show later today to discuss his own story of how he was able to survive some vicious beefs and later develop a mindset that has allowed him to overcome the urge to lash out at others. (See the article Kidnapped Infant.)
Also, on Friday the station will hold a rally on Martin Luther King Ave, S.E. to help bring awareness to the surrounding community of the need to come together to help slow the tide of violence. Groups such as The Roving Leaders, including Mark Too Sharp Johnson and the D.C. Music Group have
been invited to assist in bringing their efforts to the fore because they have already been successful in stimulating peace in and around South East Washington DC. The Prime Time Band will perform for the youth and community leaders will offer their words of encouragement. Attempts will be made to even bring a truce between warring neighborhoods. We encourage all to get involved.
