Ear To The Street

Million Man Watch

It's hard to believe that the Million Man March took place nearly 20 years ago, come October 16, 1995. I remember that day like it was yesterday. It was a holiday for me and my crew. We resided in the mean streets of Landover, Maryland, we parked our rides at the Minnesota Avenue Metro then hoped on the train. The ride down there was full of trepidation because as a Black man during that period, violence was at a high threshold and the Feds were setting up shop all over the country to work with State and Local police to rid the world of Black street entrepreneurs once and for all.

As a man from the streets, you could feel the intense heat of the authorities and snitches all around. You were just wondering when it would be your day to be picked up in one of the quarter annual sweeps that were taking place on a regular basis. Farrakhan was at an all-time high in popularity poles in the streets, but he was constantly being villianized in the mainstream media. We knew the real, but the world didn't have a clue.

Then the Million Man March was announced. I didn't believe Farrakhan would live to see that day arrive when the White establishment would let a bunch of "N-words" march on Washington, so as we made the long trek from the Stadium/Amory, where we got off the train, to the grounds of the National Mall and saw all the beautiful faces of men from all ethnic backgrounds of color, garbs, religions, styles, states, and countries, we knew it was going down. It was the most beautiful sight I had ever seen. If you can imagine a pack of pit-bull walking with clowder of cats, all on the look-out to rid themselves of potential troublemakers, then you can get a sense of how breathtaking the scene was.

Nobody on the planet would have come out, at that time, and stated that they didn't believe there would be no incidents of violence, not even the Brothers who participated. All you could do was hope for the best, but once we got in the midst of so much Brotherly love, it was hard to imagine that anybody would dare mess it up. Why can't we continue that love for our neighbors every day? That question perplexes me every time I think of it.

I doubt this march will come near to what the first one bolstered, but it couldn't have come at a better time. In the next article, we'll consider why this march is so needed in America at this time in history.
