North East Groovers Reunion
Sunday night at Ibiza Nightclub, an event was held that no one in attendance will soon be able to forget. A local entertainer known as Rapper Dude Chris celebrated his birthday with the re-emergence of the legendary Go-Go Band, North East Groovers (N.E.G). This event was announced months ago, and tickets sold out before there was even a need to consult a promoter to get the word out to the public. So, the credit of the jam packed room goes to the power possessed in the celebrity of Rapper Dude coupled with the Grateful Dead-like following of North East Groovers.

The show was set to start at 10pm, the crowd was there before much of the production personnel, and by 8:30pm the end of the line was quite a ways from the front door, which wasn't even a single file line. Security was extremely tight, and the front door staff was very organized as they let the people in to flood the reception area of the club. Go-Go Radio was interviewing show participants, red carpet style, as they made their entrance through the front door.
By the time the band came on to play, the crowd had filled the entire room to its capacity. Rapper Dude came out with the What? Band, and then played another set with another reconstituted What? Band. They both primed the people for Rapper Dude's original band, N.E.G. to take the stage, so when Huggie, Thirty-Two (Dave), and Rah-Rah (the name that Rapper Dude was known by when N.E.G. played together during the 90's) took the stage for the first time in a decade, the people could hardly contain themselves. The base drum kicked, and Huggie sung a slow jam, then the band went into their hit song "Booty Call" that had everybody in the house bouncing and waving their hands in the air.

They transitioned into their next song, and the room went wild as the people bounced a little harder and swayed to one of the liveliest performances that this reporter has ever seen. As I surveyed the room, there could not be found anybody who was standing still without at least bobbing their head. There was even a burley white guy guarding the back exit door who was staring in amazement at how the band was able to get the entire audience to react to every call they made. Yes, even he was moving to the beat.
Unfortunately, just when the band was digging in and the energy in the room was beginning to peak, the back doors swung open, and the fire marshal along with D.C. Police entered the room commanding the band to stop playing. No one could believe that the show was over, so it took several minutes before anyone responded to the authority's demands to leave the venue. The show was over, and the band was distraught. The joy they were giving their loyal fans came to an abrupt halt, and the people admitted defeat, peacefully vacating the premises.
